Lyrics
Stuck in a Dive Bar on Christmas Eve Night or Christmas Drifters - A
VERSE 1: Good Ol’ Man Winter's come callin' tonight
And wrapped all the city in a blanket of white.
The streets how they shiver; the winds how they freeze
When a young gal walks into a bar Christmas Eve.
Her baby’s due soon; you can tell she’s alone
By her wet, weary eyes and her cold, quiet moan.
The drunk at the bar spots the soon-mother’s face –
He gives her his seat, hot coffee and grace.
Chorus:
Sing Fa-la-la; Sing Auld Lang Syne
Sing for the Strangers who go passing by
The reindeer are grounded, The sleigh’s out of sight
We’re stuck in a dive bar on Christmas Eve Night.
VERSE 2: The regulars are perched on their stools just the same –
Their names etched in deeply through decades of pain
When the door with the cigarette burns opens up
And in limps a couple who’s down on their luck
She’s wearing his coat, he ain’t got no gloves
She’s holding his hand and what’s left of their love
The Scrooge in the back; ain’t seen true love in years
Says “this ones on me” and buys them both beers
CHORUS:
BRIDGE: The bandleader’s hands are both holding a chord
Of a song he forgets though he’s played it before
A 1000 times standing right there by the door
He wonders: why even sing it once more?
Then, in comes a kid, his hands need a thaw.
He’s begging to stay just for one single song
The bartender nods, the bandleader smiles
rememb’rin’ to sing with the heart of a child
CHORUS / Solo on Chorus
VERSE 4: This song’s for you drifters who’ve weathered a storm
In a place full of strangers who helped you stay warm
And find simple shelter from sorrow and spite.
We all need forgiveness (stop) on Christmas Eve night.
